2011年5月5日より、本文の最下段のところに、挨拶表現や喜怒哀楽を表すフレーズなどを分類してみましたので、これも活用してください。これからここのセクションも充実させていきます♪(^_-)-☆

No. 1254 “Just sit tight.”

まだ幼いときであれば、
“Sit down.”
「お座りなさい」
と親に言われたこともあれば、
学校で先生に言われたこともあると
思いますが、大人になってから
“Sit down.” と言われることは
ないと思います。

「どうぞお座りください」とか
「おかけになってください」
という意味で、
“Please take your seat.”
と言うことはよくありますが、
やはり、
“Sit down.” というと、
“Please sit down.” と “please” を
つけたとしても、なんとなく上から目線、
のような印象があります。

でも、本日の、
“Just sit tight.” は、
上から目線でもなんでもなくて、これで、
「しっかり座る」というような意味から、
「じっとしてて」
「動かないで」
とか、あるいは、場面によって、
「腰を据える」とか
「静観する」という意味で使います。

冒頭に “Just” がつくのは、これも
何回かワンポイントで登場している
ポイントで「ちょっと」という
感じの意味で使います。

これとほとんど同じ意味で、もう一つ
よく使うのが、
“Just hold still.”
というフレーズで、意味は同じですが、
こちらの方は、
「じっとして、動かないでね」
というニュアンスが強くて、例えば、
何かポーズをとってもらっているような
ときに使います。

アメリカが車社会なので、車の構造に
関する表現が日常結構使われる、
という話しを昔したことが
ありますが (No. 327)、そういう
意味では、
“Buckle up!”
というのがあって、これは、
「シートベルトを締めて」
という意味になります。実際に
車に乗ったときに、
“OK, buckle up.”
「じゃ、シートベルト締めて」
と言うこともあれば、
「ちょっと急ぐからね~」とか、
「道路がガタガタになるよ~」
というときに、
“Buckle up!” とか、
“Hold on to your seat.”
「しっかりシートにつかまってててよ」
つまり、
「しっかり座っててよ」
なんていう言い方もよくします。

普通の日常生活の中では、
「ちょっと暫く静観しようか」
なんていうときに、
“Let’s just sit tight.”
とか、あるいは、
“You just sit tight and wait, OK?”
「じっと待ってて」とか、
“Don’t worry, just sit tight.”
「心配しないで、そこに居て」
なんて言ったりします♪
